Girls faced a large number of restrictions during the 1800's structured solely on the gender. The Cult of Domesticity dished up as a basic guide that explained the correct ways girls of this time frame were likely to act. This essentially presented four appropriate characteristics girls had to show: piety, chastity, domesticity, and submissiveness. A large number of authors captured the difficulties within a woman's life with having to deal with such strict expectations inside their writing. These types of included Emily Dickinson with her poetry " I actually felt a funeral during my brain”, " This is my letter for the World”, and " These are the days when the Birds arrive back”, Kate Chopin's " The Story associated with an Hour”, and Charlotte Perkins Gilman's " The Yellow-colored Wallpaper”. These kinds of pieces of literature proved ladies struggle to live with the demands of the Conspiracy of Domesticity, and contemporary society itself.
Emily Dickinson herself was obviously a very strange, secluded girl and that indicated her thoughts through her poems. In " I felt a funeral within my brain”, Dickinson writes " And I and silence several strange race/ wrecked, one, here” (15-16). This is a first-rate example of the solidarity that held her captive and caused her descent in to madness. Her poem is a cry to help, but being the submissive woman she was supposed to be, the girl hid away her feelings while even now acting weak and substandard. Another example of submissiveness may be taken from her poem " This is my own letter to the World”. That starts off " This is my personal letter towards the world/ That never composed to Me” (Dickinson 1-2). She is again crying out up against the unfairness the fact that " world” never wrote to her, or perhaps acknowledged her because of her sex. Like a woman the girl was constantly in the shadow of a person and therefore would not matter. By " These are the days when the Birds arrive back”, Dickinson wrote " Thy consecrated bread to take/ and thine underworld wine! ” (17-18).
