Not because the early days of Jane Campion (The Piano) has international cinema viewed a talent as bravely attuned to the primal female voice while the Dartford-born writer-director Donna Arnold. Inside the space of only two features and one Oscar-winning short film (Wasp), Arnold features articulated an unnerving, unsatisfactory but constantly compelling worldview where hard-knock women and sado-masochistic desires wage war. In her previous characteristic, Red Street, she pitched an avenging widow in a Glasgow structure block and a devious world of sexual self-hatred. In Fish Tank, she moves to a great Essex authorities estate and explores the often conflicting internal and external desires of your teen tearaway and wannabe street dancer, Mia (Katie Jarvis, pictured). A typical working day in the life of 15-year-old Mia, who has been expelled from school, comes with taunting some local ladies, head- butting a competitor dancer, planning to free a malnourished pony, narrowly avoiding gang rape, enjoying a few potty-mouthed exchanges with her precocious little sister (sample dialogue: " Shut up f*** encounter! ” " If I'm a f*** face, you're a c*** face! ”), and becoming slapped through the head simply by her bleach-blonde mother, who have screams: " I practically had you aborted! Also made the appointment! ” So far, thus Loach. Although Mia's your life, and the film surrounding her, suddenly delves into uncharted territory with the arrival of mum's fresh boyfriend, a sensitive and attractive d g called Connor (played by rising legend Michael Fassbender). The latter's intentions to Mia are seemingly paternalistic, but they apparently awaken complicated adolescent thoughts within. Through snatched exchanges, day journeys and filled kitchen activities, their romantic relationship see-saws queasily into a simmering Electra. As a result when Connor's appetites and Mia's minor seductions at some point collide the repercussions are, naturally, deep. Related Links

In all this, Arnold pulls flawless performances from her cast while making exemplary choices with her camera — she shoots Fassbender in particular which has a fantastically and also eye, casually catching the low-slung denims, the maltaise exposed as well as the wiry nude torso. Nevertheless , there are some splits in Arnold's methods. Her treatment of course is interested, and vaguely patronising. The attempts to draw laughs from trash culture principles is certainly ill-advised. When Mia's mother alerts her ladies against sullying their clothing with the collection " Oi! Those weakling tracksuits price £20, en know! ” it feels vicious and sneering. And the endless roaming shots of breeze-block estates can seem like sluggish visual short for remarkable credibility in a superlative film that is normally awash with it. The Cannes Film Festival anointed a new star today: a teen with no acting experience who had been discovered using a row with her boyfriend on a stop platform in Essex. Katie Jarvis, 17, is a raw and convincing presence in each and every scene of Fish Tank, one among three English films contending for the Palme d'Or this year. But while the rest of the ensemble and the hotly tipped representative Andrea Arnold soaked up the plaudits from the cinema community, their lead actor was more or less unaware of the bother over her debut.
