PREFACE

General Character and Purpose of the Instructor's Manual

This Manual contains: (I) Detailed alternatives of the even-numbered problems. (II) General responses on the aim of each section and its class room use, with mathematical and didactic information on teaching practice and pedagogical aspects. Some of the comments consider whole chapters (and are indicated accordingly).

Changes in Difficulty Sets

Difficulties changes in this kind of edition in the text will be listed and explained inside the Preface with the book. They will include global improvements made by updating and streamlining chapters as well as a large number of local advancements aimed at simplification of the whole text. Speedy orientation is definitely helped by chapter summaries at the end of each chapter, such as the last copy, and by the subdivision of sections in subsections with unnumbered headings. Resulting effects of these improvements on the trouble sets are as follows. The difficulties have been improved. The large amount of more than four thousand problems has become retained, raising their overall usefulness by following: • Placing more emphasis on modeling and conceptual thinking and fewer emphasis on technicalities, to parallel recent and ongoing improvements in calculus. • Handling by advancing problem pieces that looked like too short and contracting others that were very long, adjusting the length to the relative importance of the material in a section, so that crucial issues happen to be reflected sufficiently well not only in the text but also in the problems. As a result, the danger of overemphasizing minimal techniques and ideas can be avoided whenever possible. • Copie by omitting a small number of extremely tough problems that made an appearance in the previous edition, retaining the wide range ranging from straightforward routine complications to more sophisticated engineering applications, and taking into consideration the " algorithmic thinking” that is expanding along with computers. • Amalgamation of text, cases, and problems by like the large number of much more than 600 worked-out examples inside the text through providing problems closely associated with those examples. • Addition of GROUP...
