The Sadness Rasa: Karuna Rasa

When we truly feel sad for all those who no longer see through this kind of illusion of suffering, to get The lack of knowledge created simply by maya, then we go through the highest sort of karuna, which is compassion. While the highest karuna is compassion, the original sanskrit word karuna means " sadness". Karuna is grief and compassion. The feelings of unspeakable tragedy and despair, say hopelessness and heartbreak, the sorrow caused by parting with a lover, the anguish caused by the fatality of a beloved are all Karuna. So also, the empathy and sympathy aroused by seeing an individual wretched and afflicted can be Karuna. The sympathy and fellow feeling that misery, woe, anguish engenders inside the viewer is additionally karuna. Karuna can be of a personal character as the moment one detects oneself despondent, melancholy and distressed. Even more impersonal heartaches relate to the despair about the human condition in general, the sensation that all human being life is suffering and enduring. It is Karuna of this sort that the Buddha was aiming to overcome on his path to solution.
